Description

kez (ketoconazole) is a medicated dandruff shampoo used to treat fungal infections affecting the skin and scalp, for mild to severe conditions.

It’s available over-the-counter from leading pharmacies, without a prescription. It is suitable for all hair types.

What is kez used for?
kez is used for the treatment of infections of the skin and scalp associated with the fungus Malassezia (Pityrosporum), including:

• Seborrhoeic dermatitis
• Pityriasis capitis (dandruff)
• Pityriasis versicolor

It is the only medicated shampoo indicated for the treatment of Malassezia in South Africa.

How do you use kez?

Apply kez to the affected areas of the wet skin or wet hair and rub in lightly. Leave on for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Treatment

• Seborrhoeic dermatitis and pityriasis capitis: Use twice weekly (every 3 to 4 days) for 2 to 4 weeks.
• Pityriasis versicolor: Use once daily for a maximum of 5 days.

If you use kez after prolonged treatment with topical corticosteroids (corticosteroid cream), irritation may occur. To stop your condition from flaring up (rebound), after stopping prolonged topical corticosteroid treatment, the following is recommended:

• Continue applying a mild topical corticosteroid in the morning and apply kez in the evening,
• Subsequently, and gradually, withdraw the corticosteroid therapy over a 2 to 3-week period.
